The Covenant men's soccer team closed out opening weekend on the road at Emory, looking to defeat the Eagles for the second year in a row. Emory had other ideas, using two goals in quick succession to earn a 2-1 comeback victory.
In the 18th minute, the Eagles nearly took the lead as Josh Grand smashed the right goalpost with a shot. Neither of the goalkeepers had to make a save in the final 30 minutes of the first half.
At the intermission, Emory had outshot Covenant 9-3.
Whitt Tisdale scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Jackson Bostrom in the 52nd minute to put Covenant in front.
Covenant's lead lasted for just under four minutes before Owen Clark equalized for Emory off an assist from Jack Burgess that started on a corner kick.
The Eagles' attack kept pressing forward as Ignacio Cubeddu scored in the 59th minute, assisted by Josh Grand, for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
Covenant mustered two more shots the rest of the match, both of which came in the final three minutes; however, neither were on target.
Covenant moves to 4-9-8 all-time against Emory. Emory outshot Covenant 26-6 and had a 7-2 shots on goal advantage. The Eagles were given four yellow cards while the Scots had none.
Emory had a much higher foul count at 14-3. Corner kicks were in favor of the Eagles 11-2. J.T. Gard played the final 31 minutes in goal and tallied three saves.
The Scots have their home opener on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Berea.
