The Covenant men's soccer team opened its season at the Sonny Carter Invitational as it took on Oglethorpe in the first of two meetings scheduled for this season. The Scots scored the first two goals and held on late to start the season on a winning note.
Oglethorpe was aggressive early on the defensive side of the ball, as it earned two yellow cards in the first 30 minutes. The Scots had four corner kicks in the first 32 minutes of the game, but were unable to convert any of those chances for a goal.
In the 39th minute, Lyndon Tucker put Covenant ahead with a goal assisted by Sawyer Felton. Both players were playing in their first collegiate game. At the intermission, Covenant had outshot Oglethorpe 7-3.
It didn't take long for the Scots to double their lead after halftime as Jackson Bostrom got his year started with a goal assisted by Whitt Tisdale in the 53rd minute. Covenant had two shots saved within a minute of each other later in the half as it looked to put the match away.
The Stormy Petrels got back in the game in the 82nd minute as Nick Krull scored with Owen VanMarter registering the assist. Eli Honeycutt made a save for the Scots in the 86th minute and Oglethorpe's final shot in the 89th minute was wide left to confirm the result.
Covenant moves to 7-5-2 all-time against Oglethorpe. Covenant outshot Oglethorpe 17-14 and had an edge in shots on goal at 6-4. The foul count was similar with Oglethorpe having eight to Covenant's seven. Honeycutt tallied three saves in his first start of his senior year. Oglethorpe had nine corner kicks while Covenant had eight.
The Scots take on Emory tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
