Camp DeLay Washington
Camp DeLay Washington was born in Monroe, Louisiana on October 25, 1950, to Booker T. and Linnie Belle Stuart Washington. He was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Monroe. He passed away on February 1, 2025.
For over the last 15 years, his new family church home has been St. Elmo Ave Baptist, now Silverdale St. Elmo.
Camp graduated from Carrolton High in Monroe. After graduating high school, he moved to Chattanooga to attend Tennessee Temple University at Highland Park, 1970s. While attending TTU, he also worked for Greyhound Van Lines. Camp became Chattanooga's Greyhound first African-American ticket agent. While at Greyhound, he also worked as a driver and baggage handler.
While working at Greyhound, he was later hired part-time at Chattanooga Publishing Co, later Times-Free Press as a dock worker. He was eventually hired full time after the mass Greyhound layoff. While at the Times-Free Press, Camp served as dock worker, driver and was later promoted to dock supervisor. Camp was employed 14 years at Greyhound and over 22 years at the Chattanooga Times Free Press respectively, until illness struck in 2007.
At both jobs, he made many friends who remain in contact with him to this day. So many friends at work and beyond, Dan, Gary (Big G), Mike Martin, Pat, Pat and Bill, Lisa Benton, Joanna Paschal, Sammie, Merry Storey, from Times-Free Press. So many, all friends but much much more than friends, a special bond that will last forever and a day. We can't begin to name them all. So please forgive us if your name doesn't appear here. He loved many and he was also loved by so many more.
