Covenant Women Lose On Road Trip To Huntingdon

The Covenant baseball team visited Huntingdon on Saturday for an important game in the race to finish top-six and qualify for the CCS Tournament. The Hawks opened up a 15-point lead at the half that the Scots couldn't fight back from as they suffered their eighth conference defeat.

Covenant 47, Huntingdon 66 Huntingdon came out as the aggressor scoring the first 11 points to put Covenant down double-digits midway through the first quarter. A 6-0 Covenant run started by an inside basket by Breezy Savage cut the lead to five points. The Hawks made three triples in the final three minutes as they led 20-11.

Both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes to start the second quarter before Abby Witt and Ora Hall made layups to put Covenant within five points again. A pair of inside baskets on consecutive possessions for the Hawks put them back up to 10 points at 26-16. Later in the frame an 8-0 run by Huntingdon pushed its lead to 34-18. Savage had the final basket of the quarter, but Covenant trailed 37-22.

The Scots went 3:35 scoreless to begin the third quarter before Witt got them on the board with an old-fashioned 3-point play, but they now were losing by 19 points. Amanda Neff made a triple before Savage knocked down three foul shots to put Covenant within 14 points at 48-34. With Covenant losing 51-36, each team did not score in the final 2:58 of game time.

The score remained 51-36 until Huntingdon buried a triple with 6:27 remaining. A few minutes later, a layup for the Hawks pushed their lead back up to 20 points. The Scots and Hawks traded baskets for the remainder of the game with Covenant not coming closer than 16 points which it did with 1:22 left in the game.

Covenant moves to 9-24 all-time against Huntingdon. Savage was Covenant's lone scorer in double-digits with 12 points as she was 8-of-10 from the foul line. She also brought down 10 rebounds for the double-double. Covenant was 22% (13-59) from the field and 11.1% (2-18) shooting 3-pointers while Huntingdon was 37.9% (25-66) and 28% (7-25) in the same categories.

Turnovers hurt the Scots as they committed 30 while the Hawks had 19. Covenant won the rebound battle 43-34.

Covenant welcomes Maryville to Barnes P.E. Center on Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
