– Despite scoring four goals in the fourth quarter it wasn’t enough as the Lee University lacrosse fell to the University of Virginia-Wise 11-7 in the opening game of the season. Hannah Vecsey led the way for the Lady Flames scoring three goals on five shots.
UVA-Wise got the scoring going quickly in the first quarter as they scored twice just three minutes into the contest. The Lady Flames settled in and just a few minutes later Lily Tomczik took a pass from Kamille Kremkau and scored the opening goal of the season.
Then with three minutes left in the first period, Kremkau found Vecsey for the second goal of the game to tie it at 2-2. UVA-Wise reclaimed the lead just 15 seconds later with a goal and led it 3-2 after one period.
The second period was all Cavaliers as they scored five goals and held Lee without a score and held an 8-5 advantage at the break. UVA-Wise added two goals to their lead in the first four minutes of the third quarter and had their largest advantage at 10-2. Makenna Luzier scored the only goal of the period for Lee and the Lady Flames trailed 10-3 after three periods.
The fourth quarter was all Lee as they outscored UVA-Wise 4-1. Tomczik got her second goal of the game on a free position shot to make it 10-4. Just a minute later, Callie Curtis got her first goal also on a free position shot. After a UVA-Wise goal, Vecsey scored the third free position shot of the game for Lee. Vecsey then scored the final goal of the game with 90 seconds left to make it a final of 11-7.
The Cavs outshot Lee 36-21. Freshman Savannah Weisman made 15 saves for Lee in goal. Lee had more draw controls at 12 to 10 for UVA-Wise. However, the Cavs were more efficient in the free position shots as they were 2-for-3 while Lee was 3-for-9.
Lee had one less foul than UVA-Wise at 23, but six more turnovers with 28.
The Lady Flames next game will be the home opener on Sunday, February 16 at 12 PM. Lee will host Wingate University out of North Carolina.
