Bill and Linda Hullander with Jack and Brenda Clark celebrating
The Red Back Hymnal Singing returned to the Hullander Farm in Apison Sunday night. It was a special evening as Cleveland, Tn. pianist Jack Clark was honored as he turns 91. The West Virginia native has been playing the piano since he was five years old, mostly for Southern Gospel quartets.
The late Hamilton County Commission Chairman Curtis Adams said, “Mr. Clark can make the piano talk.”
Organizers Bill and Linda Hullander presented Mr. Clark with his favorite birthday cakes, chocolate and oatmeal cookie.
The evening was extra special as the Premiers quartet he accompanied for over 10 years sang a mini concert featuring songs written by Mr. Clark.
Over 300 people packed the Hullander Farm auditorium to enjoy singing several selections out of the Red Back Hymnal led by former Tennessee State Representative Richard Floyd. The Classic Harmony Quartet joined the Premiers in singing several favorites together. Chattanooga Opera singer Jeffery Wells sang “God Bless America,”
Some of Mr. Clark’s friends on the program from Cleveland included the Trinity Trio and recording artist Kathy Karnes.
Cleveland, Tn. Mayor Emeritus Tom Rowland, recovering from knee replacement, sent special greetings. He said, “Jack Clark is a good man representing Cleveland–Bradley County and Southern Gospel Music very well. Sandra and I wish our friend a happy birthday.”
The Hullanders sponsor the Red Back Hymnal Singings at their Apison farm the third Sunday night in every month. Mr. Hullander said, “Mr. Clark has been with me from the very beginning helping us preserve the great hymns of the church and southern Gospel songs. We are honored to have him on the program each month.”
