The Covenant baseball team and Belhaven played under the lights at Trustmark Park on Saturday to conclude their three-game set. In a game where Covenant held the lead for a few innings, Belhaven earned a 7-6 win, giving the Scots their third one-run defeat so far in league play.
Final: Covenant 6, Belhaven 7 Covenant took the lead in the first inning as Zeke Gilbert drove in Roby McClarnon with an RBI single to right-center field.
Two batters later, Benjamin Johnson delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to put the Scots ahead 2-0.
Belhaven responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, one of which Covenant gifted, with an infield throwing error. The other was scored on an RBI triple.
Covenant scored another run via an RBI sacrifice fly, this one coming off the bat of Sam Cecil in the second inning.
In the third inning, Benjamin Johnson blasted a two-run home run down the left-field line to make it 5-2. It was his fifth of the season.
Belhaven got back within one run with an RBI double and an RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning.
In the fifth inning, an RBI single up the middle by the Blazers tied the game at five.
Later in the frame, a clutch 2-RBI double to right field from Belhaven put it back on top for good 7-5.
Covenant drew one run closer in the eighth inning as Cody Brewer drove home Johnson with an RBI double down the left-field line.
Covenant was retired in order in the ninth inning, all coming as swinging strikeouts.
Covenant moves to 3-7 all-time against Belhaven. RHP Jonathan Glover (3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP) started on the mound for Covenant. RHP Zach Barrett (3 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP) and RHP Ethan Goebert (2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K, 1 HBP) pitched in relief for Covenant.
Covenant had four players with two hits: Gilbert (2-for-4, 1 RBI), Daniel Bell (2-for-4, 1 R), Johnson (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR), and Nate Jones (2-for-4).
Belhaven had 13 hits while Covenant had 10.
Covenant takes on Sewanee on the road on Tuesday.
