The No. 4 seed Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking and narrow 4-3 defeat to No. 5 Furman in the opening quarterfinal round of the 2025 Southern Conference Championships held at nearby Champions Club in the Rivermont area of Chattanooga.
Chattanooga concludes its season at 13-11 after the defeat while Furman advances to the semifinal round behind an 8-14 record. The Mocs suffered its first quarterfinal defeat in the postseason tournament (outside of the COVID-shortened 2021 event) since 2019.
Chattanooga opened the match with a quick 1-0 lead following doubles play, notching victories from the No.
3 pair of Cortland Grove and Carson Gompert and the top pairing of Jakub Jupa and Gabriel Castillo. It was the No. 1 tandem that provided the clinching moment for the Mocs behind a 6-4 decision.
In singles, Furman quickly jumped ahead 3-1 in the team score after seeing victories from the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 representatives. UTC evened the match 3-3 with wins from Jupa (6-4, 6-3) at No. 1 and Kristof Kincses (6-2, 7-6) in the No. 6 slot.
The match, tied 3-3, came down to the No. 4 matchup between UTC's Cortland Grove and Furman's Walker Allen. Grove took the first set 7-5 before Allen extended the match with a 7-6 (5) tiebreak win in the second. In the third and ultimate set, Allen posted a 6-4 decision over Grove to send the Paladins to the semifinal round.

The No. 6 seeded Chattanooga Mocs women's tennis team saw its season conclude after suffering a 4-0 defeat to No. 3 Wofford in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.
Chattanooga finishes the season with an even 11-11 record while Wofford improves to an impressive 17-3 and advances to the semifinal round tomorrow. The Terriers completed a two-match season sweep over the Mocs after Thursday's win in postseason play.
