PIGEON FORGE — A program providing discounts for lodging, attractions, entertainment, shopping and dining has been developed for Celebrate Freedom!, a city-sponsored salute to veterans, active duty military personnel and civilian “first responders.” There’s even a discount for wedding services.

The 16-day salute (Aug. 9-24) offers a variety of activities in this resort community next to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The discount program covers 20 lodging properties. Examples are 50 percent off a rental of at least two nights at Middlecreek Valley Chalets, fourth night free at Vacation Lodge and 25 percent off at Comfort Suites.

Four of Pigeon Forge’s theaters are participating with various discounts on tickets— Country Tonite Theatre, the Louise Mandrell Theater, Ole Smoky Hoedown and Smoky Mountain Jubilee—and the Smoky Mountain Wedding Chapel is offering a 10 percent discount.

A full list of discounts is at www.mypigeonforge.com. Information also is available toll-free at 800-251-9100. The program is offered to all veterans, active duty military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical service personnel. Eligible visitors with proof of service can obtain discount credentials at the Pigeon Forge Welcome Center and the Veterans Memorial Museum.

Celebrate Freedom! activities include concerts by Aaron Tippin and Lee Greenwood; a keynote speech from former Air Force Capt. Scott O’Grady, who was rescued after his F-16 was shot down over Bosnia; “canteen dances” featuring Big Band music; numerous military-related author talks and seminars; and opportunities for veterans to share personal stories.

New this year is a collection of events called Stars Among Heroes. They include the LEOPARD Challenge (Law Enforcement Officer Performance and Reaction Drill) and the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge. The Firefighter Challenge also features special competitions for corporate groups, a media challenge, and the Kids Crawl, Drag & Squirt, a special challenge for youngsters. Stars Among Heroes activities are Aug. 22-24 in Patriot Park.

The Veterans Memorial Museum is the headquarters for Celebrate Freedom!, and admission is free to most events. Celebrate Freedom! received the 2002 Grand Pinnacle Award from the International Festivals & Events Association.
