A 27-unit Planned Unit Development is set for a sloping lot just off Forrest Avenue in North Chattanooga.
Wise Development on Monday afternoon got a recommendation from approval from the city-county planning commission. The City Council will have the final say-so.
Ben Johnson, a North Chattanooga resident, said he felt the multi-family project would be out of character for the neighborhood of mainly single-family homes. He said it also violates land use plans for that section.
Mr. Johnson also said it would cause additional traffic problems and possible runoff problems.
John Wise said he had taken special steps to make sure the project blends in. He said there was no requirement for architectural approval, "but we met with Stroud Watson (of the Urban Design Studio) and his crowd a couple of times anyway."
He said a tree buffer will be left along Forrest Avenue and the entrance will be off Woodland Avenue.
Rick Lee, architect, said there will be 26 units, including efficiencies, two-bedroom and three-bedroom.
Vance Travis of the planning commission said there are multi-family developments in North Chattanooga "outboard," but he had concerns this one is "inboard."
He also noted the property slopes down some 100 feet. Mike Price, another planning commission member, said it appears the design would take care of runoff problems.
The project is on a site just south of Noll Street.
A mobile home is now at the site.
