County Commissioner Fred Skillern may be the next commission chairman instead of Commissioner Charlotte Vandergriff.
Commissioner Skillern said Wednesday, "I would consider serving if asked to."
Commissioner Skillern was one of five members of the panel who voted against a 55-cent property tax increase recommended by County Mayor Claude Ramsey.
Commissioner Vandergriff, who had been expected to be the next chairman, was among the four who voted for the tax hike.
Commissioner Vandergriff last week sent a brief memo to other commissioners asking for their support.
Commissioner Skillern said he has been discussing the chairmanship with his family. His son, Rees Skillern, is fighting a serious illness and undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
A decision on the chairmanship has been put off two weeks until Aug. 26 because Commissioners Richard Casavant and JoAnne Favors will be absent at the next commission meeting.
Curtis Adams is the current chairman.
Another of the group that voted against the tax increase is expected to be named vice chairman. Possibilities mentioned include Commissioner Larry Henry or Commissioner Lou Miller.
Commissioners Adams and Bill Hullander were also against the tax boost.
Voting in favor were Commissioners Vandergriff, Casavant, Favors and William Cotton.
