Thoughts Of Kyle Rote Jr. And Lurone Jennings

  • Sunday, January 2, 2005

It might be pointed out that the wife of Kyle Rote Jr., who will emcee the memorial service for Reggie White, was a local girl, Lynn Lykins. Lynn and her family lived in Lakeview and she was a pupil of mine in the eighth grade at the Lakeview Elementary School, with one of the highest records grade-wise of anyone ever in the school.

Her brother, Steve, was also a very high achiever. Their mother taught my son in kindergarten at the Fort Oglethorpe Methodist Church. When Lynn finished high school, she attended the University of the South and that is where, I believe, she met Kyle Rote Jr. Lynn was outstanding also in music, being quite competent on the flute. The family were members of the East Ridge Presbyterian Church and active in the church's activities. Lynn also sang in youth musicals presented by her church.

Knowing this family was one of the joys of my life. I have not had any contact with them in some time, but memory of their talents and involvement and goodness are still poignant.

Lurone Jennings is also a friend of mine and I consider him one of the best preachers of the gospel I have ever heard and one of the warmest people. I saw him Friday at the Epicurean and we had a grand reunion. I have been to his church and it is one of the most beautiful in town, located downtown close to
Provident.

Lurone preached our revival back in the summer and, as I told him when I saw him, I am still revived. If you would like a real blessing, just go to Bethlehem-Wiley United Methodist Church and, if he is there, you will surely be blessed and you will hear some fantastic music. You can also see some great pictures of his congregation in action by checking the church out on the web.
