In another wild game the University of Tennessee softball team survived in an elimination game with a 5-4 victory over UCLA on Sunday afternoon.
Reminiscent of their first round loss the Lady Vols held a two run lead with one out to go in the game when UCLA hit a game tying homerun in the seventh inning. Chaos ensued as the hitter appeared to miss home plate on the play. However, on review the umpires determined that the call couldn't be overturned so the game went into extra innings.
In the bottom of the ninth inning shortstop Laura Mealer laced a two out single with the bases loaded for a game winning hit. SEC pitcher of the year, Karlyn Pickens, again went the distance for the Lady Vols. She tossed 149 pitches and escaped several big jams to gain the victory.
