Chattanooga senior Katasha Brown was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year by both the conference coaches and the SoCon media Wednesday and Wes Moore was named Coach of the Year by both.
Brown, along with seniors Tiffani Roberson, Nicole Mattison and sophomore Alex Anderson were named All-Conference by the league coaches marking the first time since the team expanded to 10 players in the 1999-2000 season that four players from the same team have been chosen by the coaches for the 10-member team. Brown and Roberson were both named to the SoCon Media All-Conference First Team while Mattison and Anderson earned spots on the Second Team.
This is Brown’s third time on the league’s All-Conference team and her second Player of the Year honor. She closed out the regular season ranked second in scoring with 13.5 points per game and is fifth on UTC’s all-time scoring chart with 1,431 points. She made 58 3-pointers this season breaking the Chattanooga record with 208 and surpassed her personal best of 55 in a season set two years ago. She was named the conference women’s basketball Player of the Week twice this year and was the league’s Student-Athlete of the Week three times.
Roberson earned her spot on the All-Conference Team for the third time in her career as well. She posted one double-double this season and led the team in scoring seven times. She is ranked fourth in the league in scoring with 13.2 points per game and 16th in rebounding. With a 56.4 percent shooting accuracy, Roberson is ranked third in the conference and 27th in the country. This year she became the 20th member of the Lady Mocs’ 1,000-Point Club and is ninth all-time in scoring at UTC.
For the second straight year, Mattison has earned a spot on the All-Conference squad. She is ranked in the all-time top 10 in assists and steals for the Lady Mocs after four seasons and is first in the conference with a 2.12 assist-turnover ratio. She averages 4.5 assists per game and gives up just two turns a game. She averaged 7.9 points per game this season and is 11th in the SoCon with an average 5.7 boards.
With 35 blocked shots in limited playing time her freshman season, Anderson set a goal for herself to break the school record. After just two seasons, the Stone Mountain, Ga., sophomore may do that before the end of this year. She leads the SoCon with 59 averaging 2.19 per game and is ranked 29th in the country. She has 94 career blocks and needs just four more to catch Tina Chairs’ mark set in 1984. She broke Chairs’ 25-year-old school record for a single game with seven against Georgia Southern at McKenzie Arena on Feb. 20. She is fourth on the team in scoring with 10.4 points per game and is third in the league in rebounding with 8.2 per game. She has the top field goal percentage mark making 117-of-202 (.579) and is second in defensive rebounding.
Moore, in his eighth season at UTC, led his team to its seventh consecutive SoCon regular season title with a perfect 18-0 record against league opponents and the Lady Mocs put together a 23-game win streak that is the longest active winning streak by either a men’s or women’s Division I team this year. This is the third consecutive year that Moore has been honored by the SoCon coaches and his fourth since arriving at UTC in 1999.
Chattanooga received the top seed in the SoCon Tournament and a first-round bye. The Lady Mocs will play the winner of the game between #8 seeded College of Charleston and #9 seeded Furman on Friday at approximately 1:30 p.m., at McCallister Field House on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. A win will move them into the semifinals to be played at the North Charleston Coliseum. Listen to Larry Ward with all the action live on WDOD 1310-AM or online worldwide at the official website of Lady Mocs basketball, www.GoMocs.com.
Lady Mocs coach Wes Moore was named Coach of the Year by both the coaches and the media. This was the third consecutive year that Moore has been honored by the SoCon coaches.
