The Southern Star is located in the old Freight Depot south of Warehouse Row. Although very popular for lunch, I prefer to dine there in the evenings so I don’t have to deal with parking.
The menu features Southern favorites, such as, fried green tomatoes, mustard greens, black-eyed peas, cucumber salad, sweet potato fries, Virginia Ham sandwiches, and baby backed ribs, just to mention a few.
Last night we had the opportunity to dine at the Southern Star. Festus ordered the turkey cobb salad, Robert Lee ordered a BLT, Thomas, the roast beef sandwich and I had my all time favorite, Brunswick stew with cornbread. Being an eggplant fan, I could not resist ordering the fried eggplant, which everyone cautiously sampled, then voraciously finished off.
The servings were generous. Robert Lee and Festus needed “to go” boxes. There was enough roast beef on the sandwich to feed a family of four. My Brunswick stew and cornbread were incredible, as usual. The authentic cornbread looks like thin fried pancakes and rates high. Their homemade banana pudding is beyond words.
I must mention our waiter, Ringo, for he did an outstanding job. He was quick to replenish drinks, always there when you needed him but not a nuisance. Owners, Rick and Nancy Adams are usually present overseeing operations; Rick manages the kitchen and Nancy, the dining area.
All the side items, sauces, soups, stews and dressings are made fresh daily in their restaurant with high quality ingredients. Over the years, I’ve sampled most all items on their menu. I’ve taken family and visitors to the Southern Star and have always had a positive experience.
Check out their menu and daily blue plate specials, a meat with three sides, at www.southernstarrestaurant.com. Don’t forget to cash in an Adventures in Dining coupon when you visit the Southern Star. These coupon books are sold from the Community Kitchen and Chamber of Commerce annually and even if you use only one or two, they pay for themselves.
