Slavin To Serve 20 Weekends And Do Public Service In Friend's Traffic Death

  • Tuesday, January 23, 2007

Royce "Bud" Slavin has been sentenced to 20 weekends at the county workhouse as well as 120 days of community service for a traffic death that claimed the life of his best friend.

Joshua Bailey died in the accident Aug. 26, 2004.

The victim's mother and sister said they favored community service, while some family members asked for jail time.

The sentencing was by Criminal Court Judge Don Poole.

The pair had served in Iraq together.

Slavin said the wreck was his fault, and he said he would trade places with the victim if he could.

His attorneys, Lee Davis and Bryan Hoss, said Slavin has volunteered to perform 120 days of community service "in honor of Joshua Bailey. The two were UTC roommates and best friends after they served a year patrolling Baghdad together."
