Wayne and I have received several E-mails recommending Herman’s. The restaurant used to have a small location on Tunnel Boulevard, but moved to a nice building (that once housed a Captain D’s) at 3821 Brainerd Road. After several attempts, we finally made it to Herman’s for dinner on a recent Saturday afternoon.
We have to agree with the E-mails, Herman’s is definitely worth a visit. The menu describes the restaurant as “Southern Cooking At its Finest”.
It was difficult to decide on what we wanted. The menu offers Oven Roasted Chicken with rice ($8.99), Liver & Onions with rice ($8.99), Spaghetti with meat sauce ($7.99), Fried Pork Chops ($8.99), as well as many other items. I noticed all the chicken, other than the Oven Roasted, Lemon Pepper, and Bar-B-Q, is wings.
In addition to the Southern Classic Platters and Specialty Platters, Herman’s also has sandwiches, wraps, and Grand Salads.
I decided to order the Million Dollar Meatloaf ($7.99) described as a thick cut of delicious meatloaf made with tomatoes, onions, green peppers and special seasonings. For my side I selected turnip greens and, a new adventure, fried corn-on-the-cob. I also ordered fried green tomatoes.
Wayne ordered the Fried Chicken Wings ($8.29) accompanied by baked beans and mashed potatoes.
The vegetable selections are numerous and are offered each day. Just a few of those listed are macaroni and cheese, potato salad, green beans, black-eyed peas, white beans and candied yams.
The meatloaf is a very find ground meat, extremely easy to chew. It is covered in tomato sauce. I did like the meatloaf, but I could only eat half of it. I brought the rest home. The turnip greens taste like fresh, but they may be frozen. The fried corn-on-the-cob was delicious. It is a small ear of corn, heavily battered and deep fried – quite tasty. Of course, it isn’t something I would order often since it is fried, but I wanted to try it once. The fried green tomatoes were very crispy.
Wayne said the chicken wings were crispy, but still juicy on the inside. He said the potatoes tasted like real potatoes. The baked beans were thick and gooey, like “real” baked beans.
On another visit (yes, we liked it well enough to go back) I tried the catfish with fried corn and okra. It is also served with cole slaw. Wayne tried the potato salad. My okra was too heavily battered, and Wayne felt the same way regarding the wings. It definitely isn’t fresh, pan-fried okra.
Herman’s has a children’s menu price from $3.49 to $4.99 and a dessert menu with fresh, made from scratch items such as Carrot Cake, Peach Cobbler and Banana Pudding.
I think you’ll like Herman’s – and they also do catering.
Hours for Herman’s are Monday through Thursday 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM; Friday and Saturday until 10:00 PM; and Sunday from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
READER PET PEEVE OF THE WEEK:
“I do not like ice in my drink. I always state "no ice" when I order my drink, though more times than not, it arrives with ice in it. Is that such a difficult request? Also, because I request "no ice" does not mean that the server needs to ask everyone I am dining with if they would like ice. When I order my salad with no tomato, they don't then feel compelled to ask everyone I am dining with if they would like tomato, what's the difference? I was a server the first four years of my working life, so I know the difference between busy and indifference.”
