Shuptrine Fine Art Group Presents Stephen Scott Young Exhibit

  • Thursday, September 25, 2008

Shuptrine Fine Art Group at Gold Leaf Designs & Gallery, located in the South Broad Art District, will offer Stephen Scott Young ~ On Pointe!, an exhibition of exceptional hand-pulled copperplate etchings and watercolor paintings.

Stephen Scott Young, nationally recognized for his realistic watercolors and copperplate etchings displays his love of the art of ballet through masterful renderings capturing the essence of the dancer.

Mr. Young, a resident of Florida, studied painting and copperplate etching at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota. He bit his first plate in 1979 and on each plate he noted the date, time of day, temperature, and strength of acid. Exquisitely detailed with thousands of tiny lines and cross-hatchings, his magnificent and luminous etchings are pressed onto fine papers using a 19th-Century Charles Brand press. Each etching is from a very limited edition of several states and artist proofs.

Mr. Young's watercolor paintings have recently set auction records at Sotheby's and continue to be highly sought after by collector's and lovers of fine art.

Widely recognized for his portrayal of Bahamian subjects, this marks the first show solely featuring Mr. Young's work depicting the ballet and the form of the dancer. His inspiration came from viewing an Edgar Degas exhibition at the national Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 2005.

Venturing beyond his comfort zone of Bahamian figures and subjects, the result was the culmination of some his best etching works to date. National Gallery Manager Rachelle Haddock said, “We have exhibited Mr. Young's works on several occasions but this is the first event recognizing his appreciation for the form of the dancer. The etchings and paintings masterfully capture the subtle lines and form while portraying the elegance and grace so closely associated with ballet.”

Honored in the past with numerous museum exhibitions, this traveling exhibition will begin at Shuptrine Fine Art Group in Chattanooga, Tennessee and continue traveling to New York City, throughout the month of December.
