The Bethlehem Center announces Executive Director Reginald Smith II will step down from his role this August, closing a 10-year chapter of leadership.
Officials said, "Dr. Smith joined The Bethlehem Center in 2015 and has been a fundamental force behind the growth and impact of the organization. Under his leadership, the Bethlehem Center expanded its programming, strengthened community partnerships and significantly increased its impact across Chattanooga."
"When I arrived at The Beth, I felt called to build something lasting that was rooted in faith and responsive to our community’s deepest needs,” said Dr.
Smith. “Over the past 10 years, I’ve witnessed the power of hope, partnership and perseverance. Every milestone we’ve reached has been a collective achievement, and I am deeply thankful for the people who’ve walked alongside us.”
Officials said, "Over the course of the past 10 years, Dr. Smith has brought many organizations under the Beth’s wing, including Boys to Men, Nehemiah Project and Bridge Outdoors. The Beth was also named the 2021 Non-Profit of the Year by the United Methodist Association and the 2023 Nonprofit of the Year for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion by United Way. In 2024, under Dr. Smith’s guidance, The Beth received accreditation by the Eagle Accreditation Commission.
Dr. Smith also worked hard to expand Beth’s food insecurity initiatives by developing the Farm at Beth and receiving a $1,000,000 grant to propel the organization’s focus on food pantries, food insecurity and the continued expansion of the farm.
"He also worked to expand Beth’s DEI efforts towards the Latino and Hispanic communities through the creation of The Beth Cup and supporting organizations through the Summer Grants Program.
"Most recently, in 2024, Dr. Smith launched the Caminos program, which serves undocumented unaccompanied minors with post-release services within a 200-mile radius, and conducts home studies nationwide, providing a $1.2 million annual boost to The Beth’s budget."
“Reggie’s dedication to this organization has transformed and expanded The Bethlehem Center’s community impact beyond our original limits,” said Board Chair Michael Norris. “His influence will continue to shape our work for years to come. The Bethlehem Center Board expresses our deepest appreciation to Dr. Smith for his innovation and unwavering commitment to advancing our mission.”
Dr. Smith’s next role will be president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga, an opportunity closely aligned with his passion for the Chattanooga community, he said. He will continue as executive director of The Bethlehem Center until August.
“Serving The Bethlehem Center for the past ten years has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” said Dr. Smith. “Together, we’ve built something powerful that is rooted in faith, driven by purpose and centered on the needs of our community. As I prepare to join the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga, I carry with me every lesson, every story and every child’s smile. The Beth will forever be a part of who I am.”
The Bethlehem Center’s board of directors has initiated its search for a new executive director and will share more details about the search process in the coming weeks.
"Dr. Smith will remain committed to ensuring a smooth leadership transition and will work closely with the board, staff and interim leadership team to ensure the continued success of The Beth," officials said.
