Dr. Larry Ewing Fogo, Sr., 93, passed away peacefully in Chattanooga, Tennessee, surrounded by his loving family.

A resident of Chattanooga, Larry was born on September 27, 1931, to the late Byron and Grace Boyd Fogo.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Susan Talley Fogo; his parents; his brother, Byron Mills Fogo, Jr.; his sisters, Mildred Jacqueline “M.J.” Collins and her husband, Gene Collins, and Nancy Caulkins and her husband, Wilford “Billy” Caulkins.

A graduate of Baylor School, Class of 1949, Larry continued his education at the University of Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee, ultimately earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry in 1955. He practiced dentistry in Chattanooga for 50 years, 26 of those years alongside his son, building a legacy of gentle care, trust, and dedication to their patients.

Larry was a lifetime member of both the American Dental Association and the Chattanooga Area Dental Society. Beyond his professional life, he served his community faithfully as a member of the Kiwanis Club and as an elder at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Over the years, he and Susan were also active members of Trinity Presbyterian, Ridgedale Baptist, and Brainerd Presbyterian churches. A man of deep faith and generosity, with a heart for wanting people to know Jesus, his Lord and Savior, Larry was a strong supporter of Christian missionaries and ministries, including Bethel Bible Village, Chattanooga Prison Ministries, Chambliss Center for Children, and many others.

Larry enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: playing church softball for many years, spending cherished time at Ormond Beach, Florida, and most of all, being with his family. He was a devoted husband to Susan throughout their 68-year marriage, caring for her lovingly and faithfully after she was affected by polio early in their life together. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, selflessness, and quiet strength. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a kind and caring presence in the lives of his patients and friends.

He is survived by his sons, Dr. James Mills “Jimmy” Fogo and his wife, Karen, and Larry Ewing “Buddy” Fogo, Jr. and his wife, Beth; grandchildren, Christy Fogo Martin (John), Katie Fogo Terry (Miller), Jimbo Fogo (Leslie), Elizabeth Fogo Robinson (Rob), Stewart Fogo (Jenny), and Byron Fogo; 17 precious great-grandchildren, who brought him such joy; also, many nieces and nephews.

The family is deeply grateful to April Elaster for her loving care of Susan and Larry over the last decade, making her like a family member to us all. Thank you, April, from the bottom of our hearts. We would also like to give heartfelt thanks to Christy Fogo Martin for her wonderful care of her grandfather over the last several months. In addition, we would also like to thank Marcia, Christy, Drema, Linda and Jennifer from Home Comforts Sitting Service, as well as the staffs at Hearth Hospice and the Hospice Care Center for their compassionate care of Larry.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 31, at Chattanooga Funeral Home, Valley View Chapel. Visitation will be from 10-12 followed by the service. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jimbo Fogo, Stewart Fogo, Byron Fogo, John Martin, Miller Terry and J.D. Martin. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Larry’s memory to:
