A larger-than-life statue titled, Spring, by internationally acclaimed artist Daud Akhriev will be installed at the entrance to the Market Street Bridge later this year.
The statue will be cast in bronze and is approximately nine feet tall. It will stand on a four-foot-tall granite and concrete base.
The statue is part of Four Seasons, which consists of a set of four larger-than-life-size bronze sculptures of the female figure. Each figure represents a woman in a different stage of life in each of the four seasons.
The fabrication and installation will occur in phases. Phase One will occur in August 2009, when two of the four sculptures (Spring and Summer) will be placed at the approach to the bridge at the south end of Market Street. The remaining two sculptures will be fabricated and installed in Phase Two of the project.
Four Seasons is privately funded through cash donations and profits from the sale of miniatures of the statues and a generous grant from the Benwood Foundation. The city of Chattanooga has agreed to pay for the foundations, installation and maintenance of the sculptures.
Other partners include RiverCity Company and the Public Art Committee.
