Harold Norman Deitch, 81, of Chattanooga, a beloved father, grandfather and friend, died on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009.
Known for his easy laugh and generous nature, he endeared himself to many in the community through his many acts of kindness.
Born in Chattanooga, he earned his Eagle Scout badge as a teenager. He graduated from Chattanooga High School and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
He was retired from the city of Chattanooga as an employee of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library. He devoted many hours of volunteer work to B’nai Zion Synagogue, which he served as a board member and where he was a fixture in the office, directing visitors and answering phones.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Osovsky Deitch; his parents, Ike and Esther Deitch; and two brothers, Bennie Deitch and Sammie Deitch.
Survivors include two sons, Paul (Lori) Deitch, of Florence, SC, and Ivan Deitch, of Chattanooga; four daughters, Sharon Lane, of Chattanooga, Andrea (Mike) Bible, of Hixson, Brenda (Rob) Minnear, of Apopka, Fl., and Wendy (Tom) Campbell, of Ooltewah; sister, Rebecca Yuspeh, of Atlanta; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at B’nai Zion Cemetery at 605 Lullwater Road in Red Bank with Rabbi Meir Goldstein officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga and/or B’nai Zion Synagogue.
