Erlanger Offers Classes And Events For May 3-8

The Erlanger schedule of classes and events for the week of May 3-8 includes a variety of HealthLink Plus fitness opportunities, support groups and family planning classes. Call Erlanger HealthLink at 778-LINK (5465), Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. HealthLink Plus is a free membership program open to adults 18 and older.

Monday, May 3
Low Impact Exercise
8:30 – 9:30 a.m.
Northgate Mall
Join us for a free, low-impact exercise class led by an exercise physiologist from the Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital. No registration is necessary. Call Erlanger’s HealthLink at 778-LINK (5465) for information.

Diabetes Education Class
1:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Chattanooga Lifestyle Center
This class, which takes place on Mondays and Thursdays, will explore ways to manage diabetes. Call 778-9400 for more information on physician referral and insurance reimbursement.

Bariatric Support Group
5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Chattanooga Lifestyle Center
Bariatric Support Group meetings are for individuals scheduled to have Bariatric surgery or who have already had weight loss surgery. Call Erlanger’s HealthLink at 778-LINK (5465) for more information.

Tuesday, May 4
Adaptive Tai Ji (Tai Chi)
10-11 a.m.
The Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital
Tai-Ji (Tai Chi) is a great form of exercise, especially for those with osteoarthritis. It can help you build leg muscles, strengthen posture, and improve balance, flexibility, and mobility. Take advantage of this free class and learn such basic skills as breathing techniques, visualization and body posture. No registration is necessary. Healthlink Plus free membership is required. Water Aerobics Class
10-11 a.m.
The Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital
Join us for a free exercise class conducted in a swimming pool to help support the joints and encourage free movement. Aquatic exercise also allows you to work out without the jarring and jolting that can be experienced during land exercising. No registration is necessary. Breastfeeding
6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Erlanger East (Gunbarrel Road)
This class is designed to help participants make an informed choice about breastfeeding. Learn breastfeeding basics, what to expect the first few weeks and special tips for success. Concerns about returning to work/school will also be discussed. This course is coordinated by a board-certified lactation consultant. Registration fee is $20. Side by Side Cancer Support Group
10-11 a.m.

Core Training Class
10-11 a.m.
The Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital
The body's core muscles, lying deep within the torso, are the foundation for all movement. They stabilize the spine and provide a solid foundation for movement in the extremities. This free class will introduce several exercises that are the building blocks for core muscle strength and coordination. Training the muscles of the core corrects postural imbalances that can lead to injuries and help develop functional fitness - that is, fitness that is essential to both daily living and regular activities. One Day Prepared Childbirth (Lamaze)
8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Erlanger East (Gunbarrel Road)
The usual five-week Lamaze class cycle is condensed into a one-day, eight-hour training session providing the expectant mother and support person factual information, coping skills and realistic expectations of the labor/delivery process. Discussions also include analgesia, anesthesia, breathing and relaxation techniques and medical intervention. A $125 fee also includes Breastfeeding and Baby Care & Safety sessions which require separate registration. Call Erlanger’s HealthLink at 778-LINK (5465) to register.
