I received a letter in the mail last Saturday titled No Fireworks In East Ridge. The letters greeting states Dear Neighbor, but is post marked Chattanooga. It also, says that it is from a group of concerned citizens
First, let me say, I have little regard for any opinion, statement or rant that is unsigned. The letter’s main topic is about the hazards and safety of fireworks. To date, no fireworks have been sold in East Ridge. In my 25 plus as a resident I have seen and heard fireworks in our city several times year after year.
Whether East Ridge permits sales or not the same people are still going to purchase and use fireworks. So please, don’t insult me by playing on safety and hazard issues that already exist throughout the state.
As for the statement that it will decrease property values, I hope they put one between every one of the 20 or so check cashing and title pawn store. At least fireworks generate sales tax dollars and will create jobs.
My wife and I live on a small pension and social security. The recent property tax and garbage tax might not seem like a lot of money to some people, but to us it’s groceries or a co pay on medicines.
Fireworks probably will not solve the financial problems for East Ridge, but at least our officials are trying. My hat goes off to them for that. As for the author or authors of this letter, I think your real interest is in keeping the sales of fireworks in Marion and Bradley County. And, as for your safety concerns, I haven't seen or heard anything present or past where you're fighting the industry over these concerns?
You state you need volunteers to help you fight, I really believe you mean residents?
