Here is the Winter 2012 schedule at Townsend Atelier. Pre-registration for all classes is required on-line or by phone.

Sculpting the Figure
Instructor: Elizabeth Rogers
Jan. 14-15, 9 a.m.-5 p.m
This course is designed to introduce beginners to the practice of modeling the figure in clay, one of the primary traditions in the history of sculpture. During the workshop the student will model several sculptures while observing a live model.

Drawing 102
Instructor: Thomas Caleb Goggans
Mondays, Jan. 23-Feb. 27, 6-9 p.m.
No experience is necessary for this class, which will expound on foundational concepts and application of drawing.

The Art of the Tin Can
Instructor: Karen Rudolph
Introduction to Tin Can Art
Saturday, Jan. 21, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Tin Can Boxes
Sunday, Jan. 22, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Usually considered useless after the items inside are gone, tin cans provide material for whimsical one-of-a-kind creations. With a little ingenuity and the right tools, the possibilities are infinite. Wall sculptures, toys, jewelry, handbags, clocks, lamps, and even musical instruments.

As You Like It: Oil Painting Workshop
Instructor: James Courtenay James
Tuesdays, Jan. 24-Feb. 28, 6-9 p.m.
In this 6 week oil painting class, students will choose a cityscape, a figurative scene or a still-life to complete in an exploration of traditional oil painting techniques.

Floral Painting
Instructor: Mia Bergeron
Jan. 28-29, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
This 2 day workshop is for those students that want to let loose a bit and work from life in a modern format. Students will work from a floral still life set up by the instructor.

Watercolor
Instructor: Durinda Cheek
Mondays, Jan. 9-Feb. 20
beginning 9 a.m.-noon | advanced 1-4 p.m.

Oil Painting

Tuesdays, Jan. 10-Feb. 21
beginning 9 a.m.-noon | advanced 1-4 p.m.

Introduction to Figure Drawing
Instructor: Townsend Atelier Staff
Wednesdays, Feb. 1-March 7, 6-8 p.m.
Working from a live unclothed model, this 6 week class is designed to help students obtain the basic skill of drawing the human form, including proportion, observation, and fundamental exercises in gesture, contour, outline, and tonal modeling.

Experimenting with Printmaking
Instructor: Thomas Caleb Goggams
Saturday, Feb. 18, or Sunday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
This one day workshop will explore a whole range of fun techniques in printmaking. This class is all about finding interesting and unique ways of making exciting and beautiful prints.

Painting the Still Life in Oils
Instructor: Mia Bergeron
Daytime session: Wednesdays, Feb. 22-March 28, 9 a.m.-noon
Evening Session: Tuesdays, March 6-April 3, 6-9 p.m.
We will be exploring the visual elements such as drawing, values, color, edges, and composition, while working on a still- life. Choose between daytime or evening session.

Silk Painting Workshop
Instructor: Claire Vassort
Feb. 25-26
Come experience the beauty of silk painting firsthand in a two-day workshop. You will learn the basic techniques of silk painting and create practice samples and two wearable scarves.

Landscape Painting: Getting the Big Picture
Instructor: Brett Weaver
Wednesdays, March 21-May 7, 6-9 p.m.
In this six week class, Brett will take you step by step through the process he uses to take a landscape from preliminary studies to finished painting ready for the frame.

Life Drawing
Open Studio
Thursday evenings, 6-9 p.m.
Open studios are non-instructed sessions with live models. A combination of short and long poses will be done. Participants may work at their own pace and with whatever medium they wish to work with.
