Philip Eugene Luce

Philip Eugene Luce, beloved husband, father, papaw, and friend passed away on July 29, 2025, at the age of 74. Philip lived a life filled with immense love and deep faith, leaving a lasting imprint on the countless lives he touched—whether through his unwavering connection with family, community service, or professional contribution.

Philip was born on August 21, 1950, in Kansas City, Mo., to Norman "Gene" and Myrna Maudell Cook Luce, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up in Sedalia, Mo., and knew from an early age that he wanted to become an engineer. As a child, he often spent hours in the backyard, crafting roads with his toy excavators, dreaming of the future. This passion led him to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology), where he graduated with pride.

Philip built a remarkable reputation throughout his career in engineering, working for firms in southeastern cities including Macon, Ga., and Chattanooga, Tn. He culminated in his professional journey as the head of Engineering Services at Cleveland Utilities in Cleveland, Tn. Throughout the years, Philip welcomed the opportunity to mentor young engineers, and they deeply appreciated the experience and expertise he shared to help elevate their careers.

While his professional success reflected his dedication and expertise, it was his profound love for family, faith, and community that truly defined him.

Philip and Jean met through a mutual friend, and together they embarked on an incredible 21-year journey. They traveled across the United States, exploring state and national parks, with Yellowstone National Park standing out as their favorite. Their adventures also took them across Europe, to Israel, Chile, and Egypt. One unforgettable trip to Northern England allowed them to retrace the steps of some of his father’s service during WWII. Philip’s devotion to Jean, particularly during her running events, was unwavering. He would hop on his bike to ride ahead along the course, delivering dry socks, just-ripe bananas, and encouragement, always ready with a heartfelt, “You got this!”

Philip found immense joy in spending time with his sons, Christopher (Stephanie) and Kevin (Brandy), and his grandchildren, Philip "Jackson" Luce, Parker Luce, Ty Suttles, and Mia Suttles. He was a constant presence at their activities, always offering support, encouragement, and an abundance of love. His pride in his family extended to his nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family, including his siblings, Judy (Dale) Carson of Lehigh Acres, FL, and Paul (Jan) Luce of Palm Springs, CA, as well as his in-laws, Susan Wenn and Lewis Stoffel, Cincinnati, OH. He is also survived by aunts, cousins, their families, and the mother of his sons, Cindy Tinker Haught.

A lifelong Baptist, Philip’s faith shaped his life in meaningful ways. His love for God, his family, and his community knew no bounds, and he generously gave his time, talent, and enthusiasm. He enjoyed volunteering for Ironman Chattanooga, Junior Achievement of Chattanooga, and Tennessee State Sports Athletic events (TSSAA). Philip reveled in Fantasy Football with his family—especially when league champion—cheered on the Tennessee Vols, watched NASCAR, and played Bridge and Euchre.

Philip’s life stands as a testament to hard work, love, and generosity. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in knowing he will forever be remembered and loved by all.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to caregivers at Tennessee Oncology, Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, Erlanger Health, Parkridge Health System, and Hearth Hospice.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Philip's life during visitation at Hamilton Funeral Home, on Saturday, August 2, from nine a.m. to noon. A memorial service to honor Philip's life will begin at noon. All are welcome to join as we remember Philip and the love and joy he shared with so many.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Junior Achievement of Chattanooga, Hearth Hospice, or a charity of choice.
