Family Was Active In Restaurant And Distributing Businesses

Helen Stamatis Ellis, of the prominent Ellis family of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at her home. 

Born in Ansonia, Ct., she was raised in Perth Amboy, N.J. In 1957 she married her late husband, Nick Ellis, and moved to Chattanooga. 

The Ellis family owned and operated the Ellis Restaurant, Ellis Distributing Company and Nick’s Liquors. 

Mrs. Ellis was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church where she was active in the Philoptochos Society, a charitable organization of the church, the church choir and the annual bake sale. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Stamatis; husband, Nick Ellis; five brothers and two sisters. 

Survivors include her son, George Ellis; grandson, Nick Ellis; nephew, Peter Stamatis; three nieces, Karen Ellis Ramsey, Connie Ellis Hawkins, Susie Ellis Reese; longtime friend and caregiver, Sherry Dick; and her faithful protector and companion, the family dog, Pepper. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 722 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga. Interment will follow the ceremony at Chattanooga Memorial Park. Mark McLaughlin, Bill Eberle, Tommy Gulas, Isaac Atalla, Woody Atchley and Mike Mena will serve as pallbearers. 

The family will gather with friends for visitation at Hamilton Funeral Home on Monday, February 6, from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. 

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 722 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga, Tn. 37404, or the Mary Ellen Locher Breast Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4032, Chattanooga, Tn. 37405. 

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga for the care of Mrs. Ellis during her illness.
