As summer temperatures rise, a visit to the mountains is a great way to cool off, and two local summer traditions—tubing and swimming at the Y on the Little River in Townsend—provide a relaxing escape from the heat.
The Y is located where the Little River and Middle Prong of Little River come together, just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Townsend. Visitors of all ages gather at this local hot spot to picnic, sun bathe, splash in the cool mountain stream and kick-off tubing adventures.
“The Y has been a popular swimming hole for generations, and it’s a great place for families to cool off in a mountain stream after a hike or ride through Cades Cove,” said Tami Vater, director of Tourism for the Smoky Mountain Tourism Development Authority. “A lot of people start their tubing adventure here too.”
Tubing on the Little River provides a great combination of smooth drifting and small rapids, according to Ms. Vater.
“There is a little excitement, but it’s tame enough for all ages to enjoy a trip down the river,” said Ms. Vater. “And, you’ll have the opportunity to float peacefully past some of the most captivating landscapes in the area while enjoying a cool and relaxing ride.”
With its growth in popularity in recent years, tubing companies have grown in Townsend, providing shuttle service and various size tube rental (based on the size and age of the person) to tubers for a nominal fee.
