William Houston "Bill" Webb, age 84, known as "Pawpaw" or "Grandaddy Bill" to his loving family, died on Christmas Day, 2014 after a battle with severe respiratory and heart issues.

Bill was born March 27, 1930, and was raised in Smithville, Tn., primarily by his grandmother Sarah Webb after the death of his mother.  He graduated from DeKalb County High School.  Upon his marriage to Earline Young in 1948, they moved to Chattanooga where Bill began work at DuPont where he worked until his retirement in 1985.  Bill also worked during his lifetime as a residential contractor, building and remodeling a number of homes, most notably for his family and friends.  He worked after his retirement at Walter Jackson Chevrolet as a sales representative, and he was active in residential real estate management, owning, operating and leasing a number of apartment developments in the Chattanooga area.

Bill served his church and his community in many important ways.  He was a devoted member of The Scottish Rite, The Masonic Order and The Alhambra Shine, member of the Brainerd Baptist Church (Eustice class), coach for Dixie Youth League baseball, member of the East Ridge Quarterback Club, and he was involved in many other activities.

He loved NASCAR racing, the Tennessee Vols, playing golf, dancing (clogging was a favorite) and he enjoyed going to his condominium in Panama City Beach, Fl., with his wife of 61 years, Earline.  Earline had two severe strokes before her death, and Bill personally attended to her every need during the nine years of her disability.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Sadie Webb, a stepmother, Nell Webb, his father, William Houston Webb, his wife Earline Young Webb, uncles, James Regan Webb and T. B. Webb, aunts Ruth Webb, Helen Webb Cline and Jessie Webb Loring, daughter Nancy Webb Costello, and grandson William DeVoll Costello.

Bill is survived by his children, James Rodney (Annette) Webb, Dr. William Earl ("Smearl") Webb, grandchildren Allison Brooke Webb, Burton Wheeler Webb, Regan Ashley (Allison) Costello, Lauren Costello (Casey) Hester, Lashley Grace Webb, Houston Webb and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from to 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. CDT at the Smithville Cemetery in Smithville, Tn.
