The demolition of a building in North Chattanooga has uncovered a treasure trove of old signs.
The signs were painted on the side of a brick building on Cherokee Boulevard near Manning Street. The location is across from the former Loft Restaurant.
The signs had been covered up for decades after a newer building had been constructed close to the one with the signs.
One of the bright signs is advertising Sealtest Ice Cream.
Another proclaims the soft drink Double Cola.
A third tells of Boulevard Pharmacy, which must have been at the site or nearby. The phone number was 6-7224.
There is an interesting menu of items that may have been sold at the pharmacy's lunch counter. A hamburger was 20 cents and a hot dog 15 cents. Coffee was just a nickle. A banana split was 30 cents.
The signs will not be seeing the light of day for long. A new three-story building will soon begin at the 325 Cherokee Blvd. site. It will include retail, office and restaurant space.
Hamburgers at the new building will likely cost much more than the bargain price of 20 cents.
