After a win over the Baylor Mock Trial team last week, the GPS Bruiser legal team lost to East Hamilton at the County Courthouse on Monday. While they lost the match, they still won the case, as the defendant was found not guilty on both charges. The team will compete in a final preliminary round on Tuesday.

The case, tried at the Hamilton County Courthouse, was a criminal trial dealing with counts of vehicular homicide and reckless endangerment and involved an alleged texting while driving fact pattern.

At Mock Trial matches, there is a judge and jury made up of lawyers and judges. The teams run through opening arguments, direct and cross examination of witnesses, and closing arguments.  They introduce evidence and make and argue objections relying on the rules of evidence.

Coaches for the GPS team are Judge Brian House, parent of 8th grader Brianna House, and Assistant US Attorney Tammy Combs, mother of 8th grader Olivia Combs. The defense attorneys, witnesses, and timekeeper for Monday’s match included Hope Newberry, Madeleine Longshore, Hannah Brotton, Lilly Albright, Gabrielle Cox, Ayda Fisher, Kelli Marcum and Anina Mu.
