Johnny Carey

Johnny Carey died on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 after a courageous fight with cancer.

He had an avid love for the Lord Jesus Christ and his word. His greatest desire was to share the gospel with anyone who would hear. He was a member of Sequoyah Baptist Tabernacle.

He enjoyed playing, watching or listening to sports. He knew most sports statistics by heart but, most of all he had the word of the Lord in his heart, mind and soul.

God granted him his heart’s desire, by allowing him to return home to his family, have a wife and be a licensed minister.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Carey and his mother Ruby Shubird Carey Moore, and his grandparents, Demps and Nola Carey and Coy and Ellen Shubird.

He is survived by his wife whom he loved so dearly, Michelle Smith Carey. Michelle gave him a type of love he had never known before and he fulfilled his role as a husband. She cared for him throughout his entire illness while they had been married such a short time when he became ill.  He is also survived by his sisters, Cynthia Carey-Smith (Allen), Beverly Hickman (Jack), and Helen Green (Scott). Niece Chasidy Pangle (Seth, Shaun, Christian), nephew, Jackson Hickman (Lauren, Cody, Abby, Gabe), step-daughter, Keeli Dunikowski (Richard); step-grandchildren, Rheyna and Richie who loved “Papa Johnny”. He left behind many family members whom he loved so dearly. He had a circle of friends throughout Tennessee who share in his loss. He was loved by numerous brothers and sisters in Christ from various churches throughout East Tennessee. He will be missed by a best friend of many years, Ronald “Pod” Martin whom he loved like a brother.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with interment following at Shubird Cemetery. His long time pastor, mentor, and friend, Reverend David Stancil of Sequoyah Baptist Tabernacle as well as another friend and mentor George Pinkham of Fentress County, Tn. will officiate.

Visitation is on Friday, Sept. 4, from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the funeral home.
