Bryan Golf Team Finishes 9th At Skyhawk Invitational

  • Wednesday, March 16, 2016
The Bryan Lions Men’s Golf team, led by sophomore Nick Scully who fired a 73 on day one and 78 on day two for a total of 151, finished 9th among 17 teams at the Skyhawk Invitational which concluded on Tuesday (Mar. 15). Scully was in 4th place after the first day of competition but slipped back to 9th place by the end behind tournament winner Reinhardt University (Ga.) on the beautiful and challenging 7,057 yard Mountain View Course of Callaway Gardens, which was formerly the venue for the PGA Buick Open.

Freshman, Paul Houk, who hit a second day 78 to go with his first round score of 75, slipped from 8th to 17th place by the end of the Invite.
Two Lions, sophomore Bryce Pickens and junior Carson Griffin, improved on day two after shooting 79’s while junior Hunter Bruce notched an 82 and sophomore Lucas Coffelt recorded an 83. The Lions started the day in 8th place after firing an opening day 311 but couldn’t maintain positioning after tallying a second day 317.

The Bryan Lady Lions had one individual play in the tournament, freshman Krista Reinhardt, who followed up her strong opening day 79 with a 78, but she was not able to gain on the leaders as she collected an 8th place finish (157) behind Travecca medalist, Alexa Rippy, who fired a one under (143) for two days.

“I’m very proud of Krista’s efforts,” said Head Bryan Lions Golf Coach, Peter Bollant. “It was her first time seeing the course, and this will be the venue for the National Qualifier in the end of April. The field was very strong with Milligan setting a new Appalachian Athletic Conference record for team scoring, and yet Krista hung right in there with the leaders. She was really rolling midway through her second round at only one over through 13 holes. Hopefully, she will be able to build on that and have a strong spring and be ready to challenge for the AAC individual crown later this this season. To shoot a 157 on her first time playing a very challenging golf course is a great accomplishment. Most of the other players who finished ahead of Krista have played this course several times.”

The men and women’s teams are back in action this next week (Mar. 21-22) at the Cumberland University Invitational at the Windtree Golf Club in Mt. Juliet, Tenn.
