Merchant Marine Radio Operator Held Long Career With Allstate

Harry Max Manning, 90, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

Harry was born in Pikeville, TN on June 7, 1925 to U.B. and Beulah Manning. He graduated Chattanooga High School, then joined the Merchant Marines as a radio operator. Early in his life he owned Coin Machine Company. About 1962, he relocated to Florida, having married Barbara Lee. He became an Allstate agent and kept that business for 25 years. He relocated to Chattanooga abou14 years ago and married Helen Coleman. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

Harry was preceded in death by his two brothers, J.D., and Dewey Manning as well as his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen; two children, Sharon France (James) and Russ Manning (Sandy); seven grandchildren, J.C, France, Amy Lea France, Jennifer Bates, Jason Manning, Kacey Manning, Ashley Byers, and Major Manning; 12 great-grandchildren; stepson, James T. Coleman; and step granddaughter, Dawn Cox. Harry lived life to the fullest.

At age 87, he went skydiving and jumped from an airplane at 18,000 feet, twice, then went to the NASCAR track and took several turns at over 100 MPH. He attended every performance of the Chattanooga Symphony and the Chattanooga Theater Center last year. Harry was great fun for everyone who knew him.

Memorial services will be conducted in Florida at a later date.

 Arrangements are under the care of the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
