More than a week after the midterm elections, Democrat Stacey Abrams has acknowledged defeat in the Georgia gubernatorial race to Republican candidate Brian Kemp.
"I acknowledge that former Secretary of State Brian Kemp will be certified as the victor in the 2018 gubernatorial election," said Ms. Abrams said at a press conference Friday.
Officials said Mr. Kemp had the most votes in the election, but Ms. Abrams contested there were outstanding that votes that had to be counted, including absentee and provisional ballots. After all votes were counted, Mr. Kemp was still the winner.
Ms. Abrams said she wasn't conceding the race, but recognized the state of Georgia was going to certify Mr. Kemp the winner and didn't want to "scheme" her way into office.
