Residents Fighting 150-Foot Cell Tower Planned Near Hurricane Creek Subdivision

  • Wednesday, August 8, 2018

A group of residents who live near Hurricane Creek subdivision in East Brainerd are fighting a 150-foot cell tower.

The County Commission is set to vote next Wednesday on whether or not to approve it.

The address is 9031 Jennifer Dr., but the access road to the steep site is off Fuller Road.

Attorney Kurt Faires said the site meets all the federal requirements and the commission is required to approve it.

He also said that the tower will be further away from a recently built house on a nearby cul-de-sac. He said it will be 190 feet away rather than 156 feet. Also, he said the tower will be designed with a 75-foot break point.

The attorney said the tower at its base will have the standard 10-foot fence with barbed wire at the top.

He said the tower is needed because of a gap in cell service in that sector. He said the gap could cause 911 calls to be missed.

Commissioner Sabrena Smedley, who is urging denial of the request, said she was assured there would not be a 911 gap.

She said the tower is too close to residential sections and will lower property values.

She said a nearby church would welcome the tower and the income it would bring.

Gina Lee, who lives nearby, said she expects the tower would bring a 20 percent decline in her property value, eating up savings by her military veteran husband.

She also said the tower would be a visual eyesore.
