David Thompson Sr., a retired CFD captain (with 30 years of service), is extremely grateful for the actions crews from Station 13 and Hamilton County EMS who rushed to his side when he had a heart attack at work.
It happened in July. Mr. Thompson was not breathing and had no pulse. His coworkers started CPR and Chattanooga police officers took over, followed by Chattanooga firefighters and paramedics. They also used a defibrillator in order to save his life. It was a joint effort by those on the scene and Mr. Thompson is here today because of their quick work.
Early CPR and defibrillation are key in cardiac arrest situations.
To express his gratitude, Mr. Thompson cooked a steak dinner for the firefighters, paramedics and police officers on Wednesday night at Station 13 on Brainerd Road.
The Thompson family has an incredibly strong legacy within the Chattanooga Fire Department. All of Mr. Thompson's sons followed in his footsteps. David Thompson Jr. is a Battalion Chief. Jack Thompson is a senior firefighter and president of the Chattanooga Fire Fighters Association Local 820. Captain Robert Thompson works in Special Operations. They were there Wednesday night to show their support for their father and those who helped him during his medical emergency.
