Members of the City Council said they will meet with Police Chief David Roddy on upgrades to the current Police Advisory Panel.
They indicated that each of the nine would like an appointee on the panel that reviews police officer actions.
Councilwoman Carol Berz said, "There's been some rough stuff here. It's awful." But she said Chief Roddy stands ready to work with the council on making needed corrections.
After council members recently expressed anger over a video showing a man being beaten, the Police Department had a flurry of dismissals of officers who had gotten into trouble.
Honna Rogers, of the Municipal Technical Assistance Service (MTAS) said the mayor could set up a panel or the city could set one up. But she said, since authorization for such a panel is not in the city charter that the city's committee would not have subpoena powers.
She said there would be no obligation for officers to appear before the group.
Councilman Anthony Byrd said the council may set up an acceptable panel by working with Chief Roddy, "but then there will be a new mayor and maybe a new chief who could take it all away."
Another meeting will be held to work out details about the revised oversight panel.
