The 2020 TSSAA State Cross Country Championships will be held this Thursday and Friday at Sanders Ferry Park in Hendersonville, a new location for the annual event. For years it was held at Percy Warner Park in Nashville.

When this year’s qualifiers convene to race over the 5000 meter course, the Chattanooga-area will be well represented. The Scenic City and close surrounding area will have 17 teams and 127 competitors on the course in the various races.

In the Division I Large School category there are five schools represented, two teams and four individual qualifiers in the boys’ division, while the girls will have two teams and one individual qualifier.

The Cookeville boys took top honors in last week’s region 3 meet, but they were followed closely by Ooltewah, Walker Valley and Cleveland.

Ryan Lovelace of Cleveland finished first with a time of 16:48.85, while Ooltewah’s Chance Underwood and Isaiah Weaver raced to third and fourth place finishes.  Cookeville’s Landri Wilcox bested the girls’ field at 19:02.59. Soddy Daisy’s Katilee Croft was the top local finisher at third with a time of 20:41.55 and earned a spot at state as an individual qualifier.

The Cookeville girls took top team honors with Walker Valley and Cleveland hot on their heels.

In the small schools DI division, Signal Mountain and Sequatchie County were one and two in both boys’ and girls’ races. They lead a total of four teams and 29 runners into the competition.

Senior Sophia Gibby (19:50.45) led the Lady Eagles to the top three spots in the girls’ race, while her teammates took seven of the top 11 times.

Gibby will try and improve on a 10th place finish last year at Percy Warner.

Sequatchie County’s Jillyen Givens had a fourth place finish at this year’s region meet to help the Lady Indians to a second place team finish. Tellico Plains finished third.

Over on the boys’ side of the competition, The Eagles’ Joshua Pote, a freshman, had a third place finish and led his team in taking seven of the top 10 spots. Juniors Grayson Kennedy and Carter Bradford finished one-two for the Indians. Kennedy’s winning time was 16:12.89.

CSAS ran to a third place finish and a spot in the state meet. Leading the Patriots charge to Hendersonville was the trio of Finn Fitzsimmons, Kahleil Price and Zeke Quattrochi, who finished 12th, 13th and 14th respectively in the region championships.

Knox Webb pretty well dominated the DII-A races, taking first place in both the boys’ and girls’ competition. In the boys’ race the Spartans nabbed eight of the top 16 spots.

Notre Dame grabbed second place in both races, while Silverdale took third in the girls’ race and CAK was number three for the boys.

The Lady Irish had strong performances from Sophie Welch, second at 20:53.18, and Elisa Alvarado, third at 21:09.05. Silverdale’s Savannah Inman raced to a fourth place time of 21:42.70.

Notre Dame’s Colton Sanborn won the boys’ race with a time of 16:47.79. Silverdale’s Gabe Placer earned an individual qualifier spot with a sixth place finish at a time of 17:18.24.

In the DII-AA category all teams qualify, but look for the Baylor boys and girls, and Chattanooga Christian, McCallie and GPS to be in the thick of the competition in the large private school category.

In the girl’s races, expect GPS’ Jane Eiselstein and Nicola Van Der Merwe and the Lady Red Raiders’ Ellie Myers, Janie Pippenger, Mae Mae Powe and Helen Webb to run for the head of the pack.

On the guys’ side, CCS’ Jack Cottrell, Baylor’s Xian Campbell, along with the Blue Tornados’ Evan Simpson, Hugh Carlson and Benjamin Niehaus may be among the ones to watch.
