Chattanooga State Says Additional Students Now Eligible For CARES Act Funding

  • Friday, May 22, 2020

Chattanooga State Community College previously communicated that CARES Act funds would be distributed by the end of May. However, late Thursday evening, the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) announced changes to CARES emergency grant payment eligibility. All title IV eligibility-related requirements, other than citizenship, have been rescinded. This means that additional students will now be eligible.

Although Chattanooga State cannot now confirm a distribution date at this time, the College is working as quickly as possible to determine eligibility based on the new information from the USDOE, officials said.

The Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act is federal emergency financial assistance for students approved by Congress.

The funds are intended to help qualified college students cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, including cost-of-attendance eligible expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and child care, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The payments will not affect students’ regular financial aid.
