Bryan College’s volleyball team led by Coach Jessica Day was recently awarded the 2020 United States Marine Corps (USMC)/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The award is given to teams that hit the benchmark average of a 3.3 GPA for the entire year. Bryan College is among the 1,313 teams across the country earning the award.
Initiated in 1992, the award honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale.
Even though the team was unable to enjoy the spring season, Coach Day was able to encourage players to stay focused on academics while transitioning to remote learning. She said, “Our players are competitive on the court, but what this award shows is that they are equally competitive when it comes to their learning experience.
They challenged themselves to achieve higher grades and to work together even as they were staying apart. We are honored to accept this award.”
President Doug Mann said, “Bryan College athletes are first and foremost scholars. They are driven to succeed not only as they compete but also as they learn. I’d like to offer my congratulations to Coach Day on leading her players in achieving this important goal. It’s an honor for those earning the award, but also for those who encourage them throughout their college careers.”
