In a program with a long history of championships and recognition, McCallie's 2021-2022 tennis team enters the national high school boys ranking at number two, according to Universal Tennis, a leading organization in the tennis industry dedicated to promoting and growing the sport all over the globe.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Jeff Clark ‘91, Director of Tennis Operations Eric Voges ‘81, and assistant coaches Meg Bandy and Gary McIntyre, all four of whom played high-level college tennis and have extensive combined coaching experience at the college, high school and youth coaching levels, the Blue Tornado tennis team has a record of 32-1 since 2019 and has won the last two state championship titles, along with several other tournaments around the South and a fifth-place finish at the DecoTurf Nationals in 2019.
“With an incredible coaching staff and world-class tennis facilities, the McCallie tennis program develops outstanding players,” says Head of School Lee Burns ‘87, adding over 80 McCallie players have played collegiate tennis.
“I’m so happy for the team to receive this recognition from Universal Tennis, as there are so many great high school teams and players all across the country,” says Coach Clark.
“Our boys work hard and support one another on the practice court, in the weight room and in the campus community. It is a joy for the coaches to work with them and see them grow into young men of character, service and leadership.”
Other teams in the top ten are (1) Plano West High School (TX), (3) Westwood High School (TX), (4) Harvard-Westlake (CA), (5) Torrey Pines (CA), (6) Saint Andrew’s (FL), (7) The Bishops School (CA), (8) Green Farms Academy (CT), (9) New Trier (IL), and (10) Westlake (TX).
“We look forward to continuing to develop our boys as tennis players and people and are excited about facing national-level competition in the spring,” says Clark.
McCallie Tennis is no stranger to national recognition, as the 1977 tennis team, coached by Turner Howard ‘65, won multiple team and individual championships and was considered the top team in the United States that year.
