Students deliver their books to 21st Century Child Development Center
The McCallie Middle School art students have had a busy semester, both at creating artwork that draws recognition for their talents and making art for the benefit of others in the community.
Three seventh-graders and one-eighth grader had their artwork selected for the Annual East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition. The artwork of Jack Youngblood, Jack Macziewski, Luke Powe and Drew Zmaj will be on exhibit at the Knoxville Museum of Art through Jan. 9, 2022. A reception was held last week to honor students whose work was featured in the show.
Earlier this month, Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger presented seventh-grader Chance Garvich with an award for his drawing in the county-wide Hamilton Shines competition. The competition is an initiative to decrease littering through improved education. Chance's artwork was chosen out of all middle school entries to be featured on a billboard located on the corner of Willow Street and McCallie Avenue, not far from campus. It features a scene from Chattanooga’s waterfront inside a plastic water bottle. The billboard will remain up for about a year.
Middle school art students also made books for the children at 21st Century Child Development Center, located just a few blocks from campus. The books had the first initial of each child's name on the cover and words and pictures starting with that initial throughout each book. The students delivered the books to the children on Monday morning.
These initiatives have been led by middle school art teacher Suzanne Mortimer.
