After retirement, he dedicated his life to horticulture.  Known for Rhododendron hybridization and his native azalea collections, Mr. Wooten was a founding member of several area garden clubs. He held the office of President and was a long-term officer in the Iris Society of Chattanooga, the Hosta Society of Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society.  Mr. Wooten participated in the first Master Gardener Class in Chattanooga and became a lifelong member. A committed member of Signal Crest United Methodist Church, Mr. Wooten donated and maintained plantings for the campus as well as being a member of the Interpreters Sunday School Class and various senior groups. Mr. Wooten worked for years in the Mustard Seed program for the homeless.  He was a champion of Signal Mountain Social Services and supported their various care programs for the needy families on the mountain.
