The Hindu community continues to grow. The congregation of Sanatan Mandir of Chattanooga plans to open a 25,000 square-foot Hindu temple and community center.
The Sanatan Mandir and Community Center will be off Hickory Valley Road on an eight-acre parcel, leaving its current home of nearly 30 years off Bonny Oaks drive.
The new temple and community center opening is a dream come true for the Hindu community who have raised over $6.5 million in funds to bring their culture and traditions to the community and future generations.
“Sanatan” has a meaning of all inclusivity. The temple is a place of belief, life, and humanity learnings.
The Sanatan Mandir and Community Center planning was started in February 2017 and in April 2021 there was an official groundbreaking with a 13-month construction timeframe. The construction team has worked hard to navigate through obstacles, such has supply chain issues, labor, weather and price increases on materials to meet deadline of completion.
The Sanatan Mandir and Community Center will be holding its grand opening events on May 6, 7 and 8 and will be open to the public at noon on May 8. Officials said, "The temple will be a great asset to the community, offering the Hindu congregation, a place of worship and everyone exposure to its culture and traditions."
Currently the building will have the capacity to hold 900 people and has 260 parking spaces. There is potential for expansion of the community space in the future for another 15,000 square feet.
Neighboring the Sanatan Mandir is a newly-developed retirement community called Sanatan Park, housing 26 senior living homes. This provides the Sanatan Park households the opportunity to utilize the Sanatan Mandir in a convenient way.
