A concert by “American Idol” winner and future UTC faculty member Ruben Studdard will highlight a Juneteenth celebration at the University.
A collaboration between UTC and the Chattanooga Festival of Black Arts & Ideas, the free event starts at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 19, on Chamberlain Field.
It will open with a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation by UTC Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Engagement Stacy Lightfoot.
During the upcoming fall semester, Mr. Studdard will teach two courses at UTC, one on the commercial side of the music business and one on the performing side.
Also on June 19, Roland Carter’s new choral piece, “Make Some Noise, Get In Trouble,” will debut during a 5 p.m. online performance. It was written to honor the late civil rights leader and longtime congressman U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia.
An internationally renowned composer, arranger, conductor and pianist, Mr. Carter—who retired from UTC in 2013 after 23 years teaching music—has spent his career celebrating African-American musical traditions. His arrangement of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” is considered the standard for choral music.
