U.S. Marines Veteran Practiced As A Corporate And Tax Attorney Until He Was 80

Johnny Charles Mooney, 87, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on July 16, 2022. 

 

Johnny was born in Griffin, Ga., to the late Ruth and Charlie Mooney in 1934. He joined the Marines in 1951 and served his country during the Korean War. He attended Georgia State College in 1958 and graduated Salutatorian from Emory University School of Law in 1965 and practiced law as a Corporate & Tax Attorney in Georgia and Tennessee until retiring at the age of 80. 

 

He married his wife of 19 years, Charlotte Hinton, in 1955. They had four children and attended The First Assembly of God Church in Chattanooga where he was a Sunday School Teacher and served as Deacon. 

 

He lived an adventurous life and enjoyed attending Braves Baseball, GA Tech Football, Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, traveling internationally and locally, boating, fishing, reading, dog racing, and the Kentucky Derby where he was a certified Kentucky Colonel.  He was very competitive and enjoyed tennis, racquetball, bridge, cards and checkers. 

 

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth (1941) and Charlie (1955), his sisters – Eleanor Ruth and Jackie Joyce, he was also preceded in death by a very special cousin dear to his heart – Barbara Stallings of Sarasota, FL., and his loving supportive foster family, the Steeds of Fairburn, GA.

 

Johnny is survived by his faithful, loving companion of many years, Debra Frost, of Dalton, GA, with whom he attended Grove Level Baptist Church in Dalton, GA., and by his four children, Charles Mooney of Louisville, GA, Carol Yaun (Mark) of Midville, GA, Pamela Conroy (Greg) of Powder Springs, GA and Bonnie Belli of Hoover, AL.  He is survived by one sister – Florence Faye of Cartersville, GA., his Grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as Papa MooMoo by – Justin Mooney, Jessica Bailey, Jennifer Mooney, Joy Ludwig, Janet Mooney, Casey Hullander, Aaron Hullander, Sarah Barfield, Rachel Powell, Jonathan Hullander and as Pappaw by Christine Conroy, Savanna Conroy, and Grandpa by Evan Belli and Alex Belli and 12 Great-Grandchildren. 

 

A Celebration of Johnny’s Life will be held in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 22, with committal service and military honors to follow at 12:30 at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave.. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday July 21, from 5-9 p.m.

 

Because he was known for his kindness, it is requested in lieu of flowers that you perform a random act of kindness in his memory.
