Lee Men, Women Compete In Vanderbilt Invitational

Six Lee University men’s track & field team members met the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in three different events this weekend at the 2023 Vanderbilt Invitational. The competition was held Friday and Saturday inside Vanderbilt’s Recreation Center.

The Flames exceeded the provisional mark in the distance medley relay, mile run and 5000-meter run. The foursome of Roberto Fajardo, Jacob Hatcher, Niquaine Henry and Will Stone finished second with a time of 9:56.81 to meet the standard of 10:05.20.

It is the top DMR time recorded in DII so far this season.

Fajardo and Stone also met the provisional time of 4:10.39 in the mile. Fajardo was 15th (4:07.47) and Stone 16th (4:07.55) in the event with their marks settling at the ninth and 10th-best times in DII. Ryan Lovelace just missed the provisional mark with a 20th-place time of 4:10.89. Hatcher (4:12.39) finished 26th, Evan Moore was 31st (4:15.79), Stephen Clark placed 40th (4:20.36) and Caleb Guthery stopped the clock at 4:20.54 (41st).

Silas Eckenroad, Matthew Fowler and Aaron Himes each eclipsed the 14:29.66 standard of the 5000. Eckenroad was second overall with a time of 14:20.26. Fowler (14:26.41) and Himes (14:29.65) finished third and fifth, respectively. Adan Rodriguez (14:34.07) was seventh, while Ezekiel Harless was eighth with a time of 14:35.40.

Jon Fielding Stogner completed the 3000-meter run in 8:28.06 to finish 15th. Titus Lagat joined Clark and Moore in the 800-meter run. Lagat (1:52.75) led Lee with a 12th-place finish. Clark (1:58.00) finished 31st with Moore right behind in 32nd (1:58.06).

Doniven Jackson posted a time of 6.98 seconds in the 60-meter dash to place 14th. He also finished 15th in the 200 with a time of 22.36, while Justin Steele was sixth (21.80). Nokia Masengu crossed the line at 50.10 seconds for 20th in the 400. Stacen Cunningham’s time of 8.57 was good for 16th in the 60-meter hurdles. Cameron Stine collected 4260 points to finish 12th in the heptathlon.

In the field events, Cale Kassen cleared 1.93 meters to tie for seventh in the high jump. Caleb Long finished 28th with a long jump of 6.28 meters. Eli Brooks cleared 4.45 meters to finish eighth and Riley Margene (14th) was successful at 4.25 meters in the pole vault open event.

Camden Williams and Matthew Black competed in the weight throw and the shot put open. Williams was 12th with a mark of 14.02 meters in the shot put and 28th with a weight throw of 14.19 meters. Black’s shot put distance of 13.69 meters put him in 15th, while his throw of 16.96 meters was 16th in the weight throw.

Next up for the Flames is the Camel City Invitational. The event is scheduled to be held February 3-4 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Lee will complete the weekend with a trip back to the Birmingham CrossPlex for the University of South Alabama Jaguar Invitational on February 5.

The women’s met two NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks . The meet was held Friday and Saturday inside Vanderbilt’s Recreation Center.

The Lady Flames exceeded the provisional mark in the distance medley relay and mile run. The foursome of Megan Adams, Liza Kellerman, Eve Hine and Aria Hawkins finished fifth with a time of 12:06.61 to meet the standard of 12:06.77. It is the second-best DMR time recorded in DII so far this season.

Lily Hare’s 10th-place time of 4:56.81 beat the provisional time in the mile (4:57.54). Hawkins finished 11th at 4:57.66, while Kellerman (5:01.14) was 16th and Adams placed 17th (5:03.22). Kellerman and Hare also competed in the 800-meter run with Kellerman finishing 19th (2:19.55) and Hare crossing the finish line at 2:22.18 (22nd).

Julia Halterman completed the 5000-meter run at 17:29.44 for third place. Olivia McLain was close behind in fifth place (17:32.04). Katie Krueger’s time of 17:54.49 put her in 14th.

Kristen Blevins was 18th (25.30) in the 200-meter dash and 19th (7.79) in the 60. Baylie Murphy and Jaila Whitaker joined Blevins in the 60. Murphy finished 34th (7.96) and Whitaker was 42nd (8.16). Janay Ryan was 36th (25.99) in the 200 with Kaia Martz stopping the clock at 26.46 for 43rd.

In the 400, Hine was ninth with a time of 57.78. Ryan (58.83) and Carissa Hall (58.86) were 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Hine, Ryan and Hall were joined by Martz to complete the 4x400-meter relay in 3:55.02 (11th).

Liezl Theron and Sydney White were Lee’s representatives in the pentathlon. Theron accumulated 3065 points for 18th and White finished 20th with 2935 points.

In the field events, Jydia Faucette placed 22nd with a long jump of 5.56 meters. Devon Jackett cleared 1.45 meters to finish in the high jump open. Brynn Depinet went over 3.45 meters to finish 15th in the pole vault open event.

Deborah Rubin placed 10th in the weight throw open with a mark of 16.42 meters. Rubin finished 28th in the shot put after recording a throw of 11.62 meters. Symphony Buxton’s throw of 11.59 meters put her in 33rd place.

Next up for the Lady Flames is the Camel City Invitational. The event is scheduled to be held February 3-4 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Lee will complete the weekend with a trip back to the Birmingham CrossPlex for the University of South Alabama Jaguar Invitational on February 5.
