The 2023 football season is chugging along and pulls into the station this week on gameday six for the 20th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs. It’s a big stop too with No. 17 Western Carolina coming to town for a 4 p.m., kickoff Saturday.
The two teams are facing off for the 49th time, but it’s the first with both teams ranked at the same time. It’s a matchup that features the Southern Conference’s leading teams and offenses along with proud defenses.
The winner Saturday takes early control of the SoCon title race.
Chattanooga paces the pack at 3-0 with Western Carolina nipping at its heels at 2-0. Furman trails closely in third at 1-0. The other six schools in contention have at least one loss.
It’s also Homecoming Week. Since the Oct. 26, 1926, 14-14 tie with Oglethorpe, not Ogie Oglethorpe but the Atlanta school, the Mocs are 61-29-4 on Homecoming. There are seven occasions with the Catamounts on the opposite sidelines, all since 1975, with the Mocs 6-1 in those matchups.
