Covenant Men Win 67-50 Over Visiting Johnson University

  • Thursday, November 30, 2023

The Covenant men's basketball team took on Johnson University (Fla.) for its sixth game of the year. The Scots buckled up on defense to earn a 67-50 win on their home court.

A pair of triples from Luke Crowden and Logan Pearlman helped push Covenant ahead 8-3 in the early goings.  After the Suns scored an inside basket, the Scots rode an 8-0 scoring run to take a 16-5 lead.  With 7:15 remaining, David Compere burst ahead with a fast break layup to keep his team ahead 23-13. Johnson responded with an 8-0 run to cut the lead back to three points. Compere kept finding the basket with a pair of triples and an old-fashioned 3-point play to give Covenant a 31-25 advantage at the intermission.

Pearlman had the Scots first points of the second half with a basket in the paint.  It wasn't until there was 13:59 remaining until Covenant got another shot from the field to drop with Eli Witt scoring, but it still led by six. A 19-3 scoring run for the Scots, put the game away with them ahead by 20 with 8:11 left in the game. Colt Donley delivered with a triple to push the lead to 63-38 with 3:58 remaining.  Johnson found some rhythm offensively late in the game as an 8-0 run cut the lead back to 17. Thomas Malcolm, Kaleb Lofton, and Zak Thomas each got on the scoresheet for the Scots in the final couple of minutes.

Compere led Covenant with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting.  Pearlman was also in double figures with 12 points.  Fisher Mitchell flirted with a double-double posting eight points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Witt filled up his stat sheet with eight points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

Covenant shot 34.3% (24-70) from the field while Johnson was 31.3% (20-64) from the field.

Covenant takes on Asbury on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Barnes Gym.
